On September 10th, from 2pm to 7pm, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust is teaming up with Archaeology Warwickshire and Magnitude Surveys to survey Hunningham Meadow, which is managed by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. This project forms part of the Dunsmore Living Landscape scheme.
A reduced population
We’re doing this because the village of Hunningham was once larger but events such as the Black Death reduced the population and left the remains of some dwellings preserved below the hay meadow. A survey of the upstanding earthworks of the medieval village was carried out in the 1990s and we think that the geophysical survey will reveal more. We’ll be using the latest technology including magnetometry and ground penetrating radar. You’ll get a chance to hear from expert archaeologists how geophys works and learn about what we know of the village in the past. You’ll also have a chance to have a go and try doing geophys for yourself. To guarantee you get a chance to have a go with the survey kit, please book a place at this link. Towards the end of the day we’ll be able to share some preliminary results.
General information
Meet in the Church Hall to register. Tea and biscuits will be available. Children under 16 are very welcome but will need to be supervised by an adult. Finally, do remember to bring what you need for a few hours outdoors. It might include raincoat/hat/suncream/wellies – whatever seems appropriate for the weather!
