I was walking down Castle Hill to take a photo of the old bridge over the Avon when my eye lit on this rather dark blocked up doorway in the wall of Warwick Castle. Strange I thought, I wonder what that used to be – an entrance for female servants perhaps? On my way back up the hill again I found a matching door for men. It seems too far from the river to be open air swimming baths so I suspect this was a public convenience, though it seems strange that it was located within the castle precincts.
Does anyone remember these doorways, and what they were for?

As you suspect Anne these were the entrances to public conveniences. They were closed, I think, in the 1980s and the buildings behind the blocked up doorways demolished around five years or so ago.
Yes quite right public conveniences. I remember them there when I started working at Shire Hall in 1973
They were public toilets, I remember going into them. I moved to the area in 1986 when I was five. They must of been blocked up in the late 80s early 90s.
Yes I remember as a child living in Warwick during the 1950s that these were the doorways to public toilets. I have no idea when they closed and were bricked up though.
If you look on Google maps (stalite) it shows somesort of structure behind the entrances. It appears to be more than foundations?
