In the 31st July edition of the Royal Leamington Spa Courier and Warwickshire Standard there is an advertisement for Bird’s Custard:
Bird’s custard pre-war
Any Doctor will tell you that in summer, good health depends largely upon an abundance of fruit in the daily diet.
Fruit when stewed is free from risk, and if you always serve it with BIRD’s – the Nutritious Custard, you have the most delicious dish in season.
Try-to-day, BIRD’s Custard with Cherries, Raspberries, or Currants.
Birds custard wartime advert
In the edition on 14th August, the Bird’s Custard advertisement has already been changed to reflect the outbreak of war:
Household Economy
in WAR time!
At so small a cost as Bird’s Custard, there are few dishes in our daily diet which provide so much real nourishment and body-building material.
BIRD’s Custard is not only a delectable dainty, enjoyed by everybody, but is also a genuine whole-some food, which may be consumed freely by the children and grown-ups, with the confidence that, money for money, no better value is obtainable.
There is no shortage of BIRD’s Custard. There is plenty for everyone. We are working hard to supply the exceptional demands of the Military and the Public.
Bird’s
The Nutritious Custard
IS STILL SOLD AT THE USUAL PRICES

Isn’t it interesting how the look of the advert reinforces the message in the text: they are no longer selling a vision of luxury (with fruit and trifles) but a sober appeal to the thrifty housewife, now that war has broken out!
