In the 1950s, there were many garages. I often used the garage on waterside called The Warwickshire. The garage in Windsor Street, Greenhill Street, Gill Street and separate petrol stations.
Lots of the garages sold petrol as well. In Bridge Street there was Hensons the butchers and a slaughterhouse – the animals were driven into the slaughterhouse off the street. These animals were killed behind the butchers and this was quite common in those days. There was later a general slaughterhouse in Ely Street which probably served a smaller butchers. There was the labels factory in Old Town and a telephone exchange by the canal in Warwick Road.
