Site of Mill at Yartford

Description of this historic site

Documentary evidence suggests that this may be the site of a watermill in use from the Medieval to the Post Medeival period. The location is 400m north east of Gaveston's Cross.

Notes about this historic site

1 A mill is recorded in 1279 probably at Yartford, probably where the lane to Chesford Bridge crosses the ‘Holebrok’, or Cattle Brook. This mill is recorded again at the Dissolution.
2 A map shows Upper Mill Furlong, Lower Mill Furlong and Mill Bridge Furlong above Yatford Meadow at the above grid reference.
3 This site is more likely than the one recorded in reference 1.
4 Information about the foundations of a possible bridge uncovered in 1967.
