Deserted Medieval or Post-medieval Settlement at Cracknut Hill
The site of a deserted settlement dating to the medieval or post-medieval period. The site of a house is visible as an earthwork. It is located 800m east of Mappleborough Green.
1 A level platform exists in the orchard to the SW of the modern house named ‘The Manor’. A local resident records that carved stone pieces now in his garden were derived from this site. One of them is a carved limestone column and could have been brought from the Priory after Dissolution. A substantial building could have occupied this site. In 1820 the field containing the earthworks was known as ‘House Piece’.
3 Earthworks survive and can be seen on LiDAR imagery.
