Further Memories of Working at Geotechnical Instruments

I worked here in 2001 for around six months, aged 19. A long time ago now, but I remember a fair bit about this time as it was my first ever office job.

I worked for CL Associates as a “Reports Technician”. My role was to take a master copy of a site report which would be given to me by the engineers, and copy it into the required quantity. This involved folding the various site plans, laminating the covers and backs of the reports and binding it all together. A role I’m sure would now be obsolete due to the advancement of technology. During quiet spells – of which there were not many – I’d be required to help out the office manager with various admin tasks; filing, data entry etc.

Excellent carrot cake!

There was a sandwich van which would visit the car park, and they sold very good carrot cake slices! On Friday lunch times, some of us would visit the Jug & Jester at the bottom of the Parade. On my last day in the job, I’d become slightly tipsy during one such visit, and on returning to the office for the afternoon, someone gave me the job of cleaning out the fish tank, deeming it a better option for me rather than being trusted to accurately produce my reports!

A happy time

It was a happy time for me, I worked with some good people, both from CLA and the EA side. I also met one of my closest friends there, who I’m still in contact with almost 25 years later.

I was inspired to put down my own memories after reading this article – thanks for sharing your memories.
