Diary of a WW1 Nuneaton Soldier, Part 4 of 4

A day off?

The fourth and final selection from the diary, continuing from part three.

The intensity of the work in this section sees Clark having nothing to eat and drink all day on one particular occasion. This period also sees Clark getting a day off, which is remarked as being unusual. Generally, this section describes a relative lull in hostilities compared to previous efforts, although some detail is left tantalisingly out. On the 26th, it is reported that “our infantry went over the top that night at Thiepval” but there is no comment on the results of that offensive.
