Description of this historic site

The site of Dorsington Parva deserted settlement. Documentary evidence suggests that the settlement existed during the Medieval period. It was situated 60m south of Dorsington Manor.

Notes about this historic site

1 Dugdale describes Dorsington as that part of Welford in Gloucestershire and Beighton’s map puts the depopulated settlement at the Welford end of Bickmarsh parish. It does not appear in Rous, but was presented in 1517 as ‘all but destroyed’ by the removal of 24 people in 1501. The site may adjoin Dorsington Manor.
2 Poor archaeology (C), period of desertion known, but documentary evidence inferior in quantity.
3 No visible remains of desertion at the site.
4The actual site of at least part of the settlement is visble as denuded earthworks on the HER lidar layer. This corresponds with one of the only gaps in the 1990s ridge and furrow plot by A Isham, re-enforcing the identification. It is plausible the settlement continued to the north of the manor but no earthworks survive and no available air photos show very much.
