Notes about this historic site
1 Ranged along the western portion of the north curtain wall is an early 16th century building of three storeys. This contains original features but has additions and alterations of 17th century date.
2 The timber framed walls were formerly covered with rough cast, but are now restored to their original state. There is also a range of inhabited domestic buildings along the line of the western wall.

I live in Canada and I was wondering if I where I could obtain a copy of the history of the castle. One of my Ancestors, William Henry Redden and his wife Jane lived in the Park House of the Castle in the 1881/1891 and 1901 Census. They raised four sons there.
There are two history booklets about Maxstoke Castle: one with colour pictures and one without. There’s a website through which you can contact the owner and I imagine that you could order from him.
William Redden, the gamekeeper at Maxstoke Castle, was my great grandfather.
I have recently discovered from the 1861 census, that my 3x Gt Aunt, Mary Harwood, lived at the castle, along with her Sister Elizabeth and Daughter, Sarah. Mary was aged 80 yrs and had lost her husband Clement Harwood the previous year, I can only presume he worked on the estate. I would love to learn more.
My Grandmother was Ellen Redden. She was the daughter of Richard Redden who was gamekeeper at Over Whitactre circa 1880
Ellen married my Grandfather Francis Henry Court
