Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has announced £100,000 towards the restoration of the UK graves of First World War Victoria Cross heroes. The project, in association with the Victoria Cross Trust, aims to restore all of these graves in need of repair. Headstones will be cleaned or replaced so that the final resting place of those who received the highest military award for valour is a truly fitting tribute to their sacrifice.
One of those graves is that of Lance Corporal William Amey VC, in Leamington Cemetary. The citation for Lance Corporal Amey’s VC and information about other Warwickshire VCs, is in the Leamington Courier. It was nice to see that the Royal Warwickshire Regiment still remember one of their heroes with a poppy wreath.

There is a good article on Leamington’s 1st World War VC’s on Leamington History Group website http://www.leamingtonhistory.co.uk/?p=2067
Many thanks for this. I’d be interested to see the citation (or edited bits if it is very long).
Another article is available on the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Museum (Royal Warwickshire) website. Lance Corporal William Amey VC served with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. The museum has his medals on display, his rifle and a diorama of the action when he won his gallantry award.
