Notes about this historic site
1 Battery (site of). Applies to an earthwork situated on the side of a hill near Griff Hollow and thrown up by Oliver Cromwell. There are no remains to be seen owing to quarrying and refuse. The ‘Battery’ is shown as ‘Remains’ on the OS 6″ map 1886 – a rather indeterminate lunate work. No literary references to an earthwork have been found during recording. There are now no signs of antiquity, the published site being obliterated by a large granite quarry.
