Comments
From the time of King George III a custom used to take place in either this pub, or another pub called “The Boot”, where grazing rights were auctioned by candlelight.
There were five lots to be auctioned and a tallow candle was cut into five half inch lengths. When a lot was being auctioned it took place when the candle was lit. The final bid before the candle guttered out, was the winning bid.
It was governed by act of Parliament and the road-surveyor acted as auctioneer.
