Merevale is very close to Atherstone to the north of the county, and was the site of a small Cistercian Abbey, housing around ten monks. It now lies in ruins. Merevale Hall was part of the Devereux estates which were seized in 1601 following the Essex Rebellion, led by Robert Devereux who was executed for treason.
