Owned by the Phillips family of Ansley Hall (Great Grandfather of Captain Mark Phillips, Princess Anne’s first husband).
If anyone can add any information about the colliery it would be appreciated.
Comments
The Phillips family were not the major shareholders in the Ansley Hall Coal and Iron Company. The Barlow family of Edgworth, Bolton were the major share holders until liquidation of the business in 1954.
The colliery was founded by Sir James Barlow, a Lancashire Cotton magnate; his son Stir Thomas Barlow was chairman of the company for many years- he was also the royal physician to Queen Victoria, Edward the Seventh and George the fifth.
It is a myth that the Phillips family owned Ansley Hall colliery- they were major shareholders post 1920 but the Barlow family held the greatest number of shares until the company was dissolved post Nationalisation of the coal industry. Sir Thomas Barlows son, James Alan Barlow was also a director of Ansley Hall and he married Charles Darwin’s granddaughter Emma Nora Darwin.
