Possible Roman enclosure, Coombe Abbey

Description of this historic site

A double-ditched enclosure visible on modern aerial photography, possibly Roman or medieval date.

Notes about this historic site

1 A double-ditched enclosure visible on modern aerial photography, possibly Roman or medieval in date. Its morpohology is similar to known Roman temple sites, such as at Hayling Island, or Wanborough, and particularly Harlow, albeit with a rectalinear rather than square form. However, a maculae in the west of the feature has circular form and may well represent in situ building material.
2 Not apparent on any other satellite imagery.
