The Dugdale Society launched its latest publication on Monday:  The Newburgh Earldom of Warwick and its charters:  1088 – 1253, edited by David Crouch with an introduction and appendix by Richard Dace, volume XLVIII, ISBN: 978-0-85220-099-5.  Professor Chris Dyer, the society’s chairman, launched the volume in the Norman crypt of St Mary’s Warwick.  The society’s guests included the Mayor of Warwick, Councillor Mandy Littlejohn.

A remarkable number of charters

The six earls of Warwick of the first line ruled their great Midlands honor from 1088 till 1242. A remarkable total of 293 of their charters have survived for this period which tell us a great deal about Warwickshire society, religious patronage, and families in the 12th and 13th centuries. These charters, expertly edited by leading scholar David Crouch, Professor of Medieval History at the University of Hull, are all featured in this volume, half of which have never appeared in print before. The volume also includes a valuable introduction and appendix by Richard Dace summarising the earls’ lives and analysing the lands which made up the earldom and the families who held them as the earls’ feudal tenants.

The volume can be purchased from the society price £30 plus £3 postage and packing to any UK address.   Overseas p&p prices available on application.
