I was Officer in Charge at the fire station. This was built on the site of the Chetwynd Arms. This was built by one of the Chetywnd baronets for the mine workers, his wife built the coffee house opposite for the miner’s wives.
The pub was flattened and the fire station built there. It was opened by Princess Anne in 1991. I remember that the temperature seemed to drop in a particular part of the new building. I later discovered that part of the pub was used as a morgue and the coroners used the pub for the inquests!

My father Donald (Don) Thorpe was a part-time fireman at Polesworth during the war, as were all the fire crew at that time. The Polesworth crew were present on the night the center of Coventry was bombed with many fatalities. My father has his name on a plaque in the “new” station.
