Dear Sirs,
My grandmother made much of her connections to the Ludfords of Ansley Hall and had a huge full length portrait of Juliana (Newdigate) Ludford (1741-1811) hanging in her hallway. I have been trying to trace her family back through my membership of Ancestry.com.
So far, I have not established a link between what appear to be my grandmother’s Ludford ancestors who lived around the Shustoke and Kingsbury parishes and those at Ansley.
I know that Ludford was and perhaps remains quite a common surname in Warwickshire and that it may be difficult to attribute a direct relationship between Ludfords who lived in adjoining parishes.
I have located a man named Valentine Ludford (1548-1620) who was buried in Shustoke on 14 June 1620. A record of his Will/Probate exists in the Series: Registered Wills and original Wills, administrations and inventories, 1494-1860, and, act books, 1532-1638 for the Diocese of the Lichfield Episcopal Consistory Court (calendar of wills and admins), “piece year range” 1494-1650.
Do you know how I might obtain a copy of the will? I thought I might be able to do this via findmypast but only got a summary of the will year 1621.
Perhaps more importantly, I wonder if your Society has amongst its members any Ludfords who may be knowledgeable about the Ludford family history in Warwickshire.
Any help you might be able to provide would be most gratefully received.
Kind regards.
Robert Campbell

The early Lichfield wills on findmypast are only will registers. Some of the wills mentioned may not have survived. You will need to contact the Lichfield Record Office to see if they have this one and to obtain a copy.
Hi. My mother’s maiden name was Ludford. Her grandparents were Thomas and Emma who lived in Birmingham, but his father, also Thomas, was born in Whitacre in about 1818. I did some work on this family many years ago now and took the line back to his parents (if memory servces) who were William and Ann and I think they are buried in Nether Whitacre. I have found records for Ludfords in Shustoke; there is a Hearth Tax Record for somewhere in that area also for a James Ludford. I have always assumed there is no link to the ‘landed’ family of the area, but may of course be wrong! Good luck with your research anyway.
I thought Ansley Hall was built by The Phillips family. Anyway, if you visit St Laurence Church at Ansley when church is open, inside by the altar are grave stones for The Ludford Family – I believe they are all buried under the church. If you are lucky and warden Margaret Antill is there she is full of info.
Trying to find a Will, there are two sources to purchase. The National Archives in London and York Borthwick Institute. For Ludfords re Ansley you could try British History Online – A History of the County of Warwickshire, Vol.4 The Hemlingford Hundred. To get to it you require URBAN and Midland. Hope you find some more family.
