Can you tell me what year English Electric were involved with British Thomson-Houston? My sister and I remember the huge wonderful Christmas Parties that were held for thousands of children, but while I think they were held by BTH, my sister seems to think that our Father worked for English Electric, and it was them that put on the big children’s parties. Would that have been at Newbold Road, Rugby?

You are probably both right Pauline! According to Wikipedia it’s a complicated tale. BTH became part of Associated Electrical Industries (AEI) in 1928, but the trade name BTH continued in use until 1960. GEC took over AEI in 1967 and merged with English Electric in 1968 (English Electric had been formed after the First World War from five companies including Willans & Robinson of Rugby). I’m afraid I don’t know where the Christmas parties were held; maybe someone else can help?
I remember attending GEC children’s Christmas parties as a child (mid to late 1970s) – we always had Uncle Brian, the magician/children’s entertainer every year, and I don’t recall his act ever changing or unfortunately where they were held?
Wow! Memory jogger indeed. Between 1946 and 1949 I indeed attended parties at both venues. along with my two brothers. Our parents, Jack and Emily Blacklock worked at English Electric and B.T.H. respectively. We much anticipated and enjoyed, not least for what we considered great presents. I have never forgotten the fountain pen and propeller pencil set I received one year. Fond memories.
