St Philip’s Church, Rugby, came into being in the period leading up to the Great War. It was erected largely through the initiative, energy and personal generosity of Percy Mark Herbert, one of the curates of Rugby. Herbert, who was the heir to an earldom, later became Bishop of Norwich. St Philip’s was consecrated during the time that Claude Blagden was Rector of Rugby. Blagden became Archdeacon of Warwick and later Archdeacon of Coventry before being nominated as Bishop of Peterborough in 1927.
