An Irishman who had served in Cromwell’s army during the Civil War and went by the name of Valentine Greatorex, found that he could cure a range of diseases just by touch. His fame spread and in 1666 he was invited to Ragley Hall to try and cure the chronic headaches of Viscountess Anne Conway. He failed though. When he failed again in front of Charles II, he decided to retire back to Ireland.
