Holbrook Lodge in Long Lawford

This charming lodge used to stand at the entrance to Holbrook Grange. Sadly it was demolished later on in the 20th century, but the gate still survives, tucked away in the undergrowth near the Grange. I am very grateful to the previous owners of the Grange for allowing me to copy the post-card and for showing me the current location of the gate.
An article about Holbrook Grange will appear later on in the series ‘A trip down the river Avon‘.

Absolutely amazing, when I was a child in WW2, we lived in Chapel Street, Long Lawford and my mother used to visit two elderly ladies in that house. I have since seached for a photo of it but no-one seemed to remember the building, not even a number of older local people. Please I would like to show the photo on a local closed group and I hope this will be alright with Mr and Mrs Shaw, itself an old village family name I seem to remember.
I’m so glad you like the photo Bernard. What sort of date would your mother have been visiting the house? Anne I was only about 3 to 6 years old when when mother used to go there, which would be about 1942 to the end of the WW2, mother had only married in 1938 and had come from Bedfordshire to my greatgrandparents in the village as my father was in the forces so I believe the people in the lodge were somewhat special for her to visit. I am sure there were 2 elderly ladies but so long ago I could be wrong.
It is conveniently dismissed that there are several public footpaths around the grange that are blocked, just like the one in the photo above…
I should mention that the gate is not across a footpath, but is currently located behind a fence beside the road leading to the Grange.
It was lovely to find this page as I was talking to my aunt (by marriage) and she said that her grandparents lived in this house. They were a Sarah and James Sailsbury and they had a daughter called Doris, who was my aunt’s mother. She remembers visiting the house as a young child.
If anyone has any information about them it would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.
Lorraine.
Thanks Lorraine for interesting information. We’d love to hear more of your aunt’s memories of visiting the house. (By the way, would the name have been spelt Salisbury?)
Very interesting piece from Lorraine, seems to answer a few queries. I was correct about the two ladies then. Do not remember James though, at work when mother visited? There were other Salisburys in the village who my father had been friendly with pre war. Could they have been the same family, would certainly solve how mother became friends with those in the lodge.
