My granddad lived in Coventry Road, Nuneaton in a thatched cottage – originally it stood on its own but became later surrounded by modern houses and it is no longer there. He was the clerk-verger to the church at Chilvers Coton. My uncle used to fire watch during the second world war. The night when the church was bombed, he was inside and my granddad tried to rescue the parish records. He collected the records but got blown out of the church.
The prisoners of war helped to rebuild the church. One of them made a ship in a bottle and gave it to my granddad.
