Hi Tom Dable here my welding tutor at leamington collage his name was Gwilliam – can’t remember his first name. We got on great, it was 1970. We used to go for a drink after Tech and his family owned the needle factory in Alcester – don’t know the address. I think he lived abroad in the end.
This is what later became the tool room and forge for the Stainless Surgical Needle company. This was a company Started by my Grandfather Cyril Payne in about 1950 and taken over by my Father Derek Payne. I used to play in this room with the forge and the Anvil. The room also had three foot operated stamps for putting the triangular points on the needles. The factory had many rooms for all of the processes of needle manufacture and packing. Most of the process from wire to a packed and dispatched product was carried out although heat treatment and scouring was outsourced to Studley and Redditch. The family that owned the factory was called Guillaume and they later sold it to my father.
