Site of Poss. Burial Mound 300m SW of Nedge Hill Fm
The possible site of a barrow, a mound of earth usually built to conceal a burial. The site lies 500m south east of Marston Doles.
1 SP471579. From the enclosure act 1758, Lord Leigh was granted land.
2 It is said that he sent his men to level the land, but instructed them to leave the mound at the top as soldiers were buried there.
3 The name of this field on a pre-enclosure map (1758) was ‘Town Yempler’. Presumably this is a variation of Yemplough, Yemplow or Yemp-Low.
4 There are no visible remains (in 1979?)
5 Town Yempler and Farm Yempler are named on the map. Farm Yempler is the field immediately to the south of Town Yempler.
6 The grid reference given in source 1 gives a location outside the field.
