My Early Years in Barnacle

I lived in Barnacle till the age of four. My parents came to rent a property in Spring Road from a relation. We lived next to my mother’s grandmother and my grandmother’s daughter, Hilda. They are to be found in the Methodist churchyard, to be reached via the back lane. There was a farm at the end of the road.

1950s sewage systems… or not

This was the 1950s so we had no sewer system. The slurry lorry came weekly to clear the privies in the garden; we had our own privy. We were supplied by vans delivering goods regularly to the village, or Mother would ride her bike with me in the child seat to nearby Bedworth or Bulkington – no cars then.

Cycling to work

My father and great aunt Hilda both worked in nearby Coventry. Both rode bikes to work. When I was growing up I had little friends next door in Spring Road called Roger and Julie – I wonder where they are now.

I went to Sunday school at the Methodist chapel via the back road. We sadly left in 1954 when my sister was born and we needed a bigger house, but I have very fond memories of Barnacle.
