Lyndon F. (Toby) Cave

Death of a Warwickshire historian

Christine Woodland

I’m very sorry to tell you that Lyndon F.  (Toby) Cave, the noted Warwickshire historian and campaigner for historic buildings has died, aged 90.

Amongst many other positions in other local societies, Toby was on the Executive Committee of Warwickshire Local History Society for 30 years, from 1973, and he also served as Vice-Chairman from 1993-8 and 2001-3.  He retired from the Committee in 2004 due to ill health, but continued to keep in touch via email.  We all benefited from his deep and wide-ranging knowledge of Warwickshire’s history, especially its buildings (he was a registered architect).  His contacts opened many doors not normally opened and he led countless society outings.  His books will serve as his memorial, especially Warwickshire Villages (Robert Hale, 1976) and Royal Leamington Spa.  Its history and development (Phillimore, 1988).

One of his last acts before leaving Leamington to live near his family was the donation of a weather vane to Leamington Museum and Art Gallery.  See  http://www.leamingtonhistory.co.uk/ for the full story.  His family plan a memorial service in Leamington later in the year.
