This picture is dated incorrectly as 1930s. It is almost certainly from the early 1960s. That was the decade that Mr Burbage opened his bike shop in Main St (foreground), having previously operated from a wooden building round the corner in Lawford Lane. The style of the shopfront is typical 50s/60s. Back then I bought a bicycle from Burbages with money I earned from Withers, the canopied newsagents and post office next door. Further evidence on period is the car and van in the background. Both are definitely post-war vehicles.
By the end of the 1960s the bike shop had gone as I remember it being Wilson’s toy shop. The post office was still there and I seem to also remember a chemist shop being on the opposite side of the road near to where the two ladies are standing.
