![Grafton Court, Temple Grafton. 1930s[The court is actually on the site of an older stately moated house that was burnt down. Signs of the moat in the gardens can still be seen. When the new Court was built the owners had the bell tower removed from the neighbouring Court Farm as it spoilt the view from the Court. The bell is now situated on the west side of the old servants quarters of Court Farm. In the 1950s my mother’s batchelor brother used to take me aged about 12, my mother and grandmother to the Court for afternoon tea. I do not remember the outside at all, just what to me seemed to be an enormous room where afternoon tea was served, people seated in easy chairs and settees and so quiet that when my (deaf) grandmother, banged her tea cup down onto its saucer i felt the whole world heard! I was under the impression it was a gentlemen’s club but can not say why.
I spent my brief honeymoon there. It was called the Grafton Court Hotel and West Warwickshire Country Club. I remember a very large Tudor style country house with extensve grounds, and there was a Casino in the basement. I left my new husband and spent some time after dinner trying to win the cost of our stay!
