Avonside, 1940. Taken by an uncle at the time I was born. My Aunt was a midwife sent to Avonside at the beginning of the war, when it was temporarily used as a nursing home for evacuee pregnant mothers.
I was also born at Avonside in July 1943. My name is Frank Smith. If anyone has any information about Avonside and its history, and anything you may know about the circumstances as to why we were evacuated there, I would love to hear from you.
I often think about a place at Bidford on Avon where my mother was in 1943, the year I was born. Avonside could be the place. Information on this site, the picture, the reason women went there – might just add up to something.
My husband’s grandparents bought this house and his grandmother employed Baillie Scott, the reknowned architect, to redesign it – as it appears in the picture here. Henry Marston Layard Crawford (my husband’s grandfather) was the local GP after whom the memorial hall is named. It was built by public subscription in his honour after his death.
I was born here in June 1942. My mother had been evacuated here from Birmingham due to being pregnant. Her husband, my father, was in the Home Guard during the war in Birmingham.
