It is claimed that the first piece of tarmacadam was laid down in front of the Manor House in 1908. A James Paton, whilst abroad, saw a tarred road. He was so impressed that he bought eight barrels of tar. Then he got some local men to boil it up and put it down using watering cans, with roses, and a brass broom. It went from where Hallfields is now to about thirty yards from the White Lion pub. It was so successful that many interested people, including councils, came to see it.
