The street in the foreground in photos 3 and 4 is Northgate Street, with Barrack Street running at right-angles off to the left in the middle ground. It’s interesting that they were clearly renovating the Judge’s Lodgings in the foreground on the left. (By the way, I wonder if this is the right caption because I cannot make out the gas-works in the distance of the old photo.)
Hi Anne
You are quite right – well spotted! The captions have got muddled but should be right now.
The full description for all the photographs in the collection can be found on Warwickshire’s Past Unlocked, searching for the reference number PH1298.
Just been looking at the photographs a little more closely – it’s amazing the level of detail you can see (the eerie shadow of the man on the street and the lady hanging out the washing on the view of Northgate Street for example).
I have just been looking closely at the 1895 photo looking down on the Butts. To the left of the school there appears to be a stonemasons yard with headstones stacked. Is this right?
