Nuneaton Memories
J C Smiths – or “Smiths On The Bridge” to many Nuneatonians, was located in the town centre (it is now Debenhams). It changed name around 1976.
Entrances were Newdegate Street, Bridge Street and Newdegate Square. Many will remember the food hall with the lovely cheeses and cooked meats and of course the broken biscuit counter!
Possibly the most memorable would be Santa’s Grotto, and the scenery in there was amazing – running water, coloured lights, it truly was a winter wonderland

Oh what happy days, I remember the food hall so well , Every Sat I went with mum , the lovely cheeses and fresh produce, queuing round the counter as it was always so busy. Sweet stall next, those yummy coconut mushrooms. I also remember the fabulous cafe upstairs. Music playing and lovely food. Santas grotto was every childs dream and I remember standing outside watching as the grotto came to life each Christmas. I think of JC Smith’s as Nuneatons Harrods, Why have we spoiled our town. Such happy nostalgic memories
