Passageway at W end of church beneath former chapel (upper room) which is thought to have held relics with former access via twin spiral stairs (now blocked).
The picture shows the entrances to the two staircases formerly leading to the Chapel which begs the question why two? It has been suggested that the chapel held a relic possibly in the niche described as a niche for an image by some sources perhaps one stair was for entrance and one for exit as part of a procession. It has been claimed that the reason for the portico was to allow ceremonial procession. Also to be noted but not shown in the photograph is what has been described as uncompleted vaulting though I consider that what is so considered might be the effect of tidying up after a vault collapsed.
