My father was Walton Handy’s grandson. He has recently died and I am trying to find a copy of the King’s introduction.
Walton Handy was my grandmother Martha Neal’s uncle. Her mother Elizabeth was Walton’s sister. A copy of this photograph sat on my grandmother’s dressing table. I have quite a lot of information about the Handy family.
This is my great, great grandfather. My father (John Peebles) was Walton’s Great Grandson and he has the Shepherds Crook from the picture along with a recording of the speech and the picture. It is a wonderful piece of history.
This is my great grandfather, my mom’s (Shirley handy) grandfather. We visited Ilmington last week April 2021. We couldn’t find his resting place but found a William Handy which I am looking into.
Walton Handy ” The Cotswold Shepherd”
Walton Handy became famous from a 1934 BBC Christmas broadcast where he was interviewed in Ilmington. He introduced King George V for his Christmas speech. But reportedly he “stole the show” with his own colorful description of the local life. He was well known in the area and became known to all as “The Cotswold Shepherd.”
Walter Walton Handy Born 1870 and died in January 1951
