A wake was originally a vigil to honour the patron saint of a church. As time went by secular celebrations became part of it. St Botolph’s Day is the 17th June. Wake Sunday would be the Sunday closest to it. There would be religious observances on the Sunday, followed by merrymaking on the Monday. A part of which was the consumption of, “wake pudding”, which was a kind of rich, bread pudding.
