My paternal grandparents (Willifer and Elsie Stow) ran the Grange as a guest house from around 1938 to 1954. I was born in 1948 so have some memories of the place. The tennis court was still in use then and my parents and other relatives used to play there at weekends in the summer. I also remember Xmases at the Grange when both sides of the family would gather. I also remember watching the Coronation on my grandparents’ TV set – my first memory of watching TV.
I always found it a slightly spooky place, probably because of its size but I can still picture the inside of the house and the long drive, the extensive gardens, greenhouses and the orchard. The woman who took it over after my grandparents moved to Archery Road in Leamington Spa sold it to a property developer who knocked it down and built a housing estate. My grandparents are buried in the churchyard of Cubbington Church just to the left of the church entrance, if my memory is correct.
My then childless parents, Christine and Cuthbert (known as Roger) Rowe were guests at The Grange for about 16 months for a period that included the bitterly cold winter of 1946/47. They recounted seeing foxes coming very close to the house after heavy snow. My parents had married in 1942 but could not afford to buy a house and wartime bombing of Leamington, and Coventry, put rented accommodation under increasing pressure.
I have a letter addressed to my Grandfather written in May 1943 to The Grange, he must have been a guest of your Grandparents. Lovely to find your post and piece things together! Thank you.
