Construction commenced pre 1940 then stopped due to 2nd W.W. I remember seeing the steel skeleton on my walk to St Matthews School, via Bloxham Gardens, in Oliver Street in late 40s early 50s. My younger brother was one of the first pupils.
My first teaching job from ’78 – ’82. Many happy memories in the classroom which is now the staff room. Teaching 8 yr olds in year 1. Mr Wilde was our glorious headmaster and Mr Martin the deputy who entertained us in the staff room with amusing experiences delivered in a dramatic voice. Most of the staff were looking forward to retirement and had seen the latest teaching fads come and go.
Fantastic memories, especially Mr Benson and his model railway club which I used to attend. My wife and I were both there as pupils and remember Mr Wild, “Pop” Martin , Mrs Angrave, Mrs Drage, and Mrs Campbell fondly. We can also remember the sirens going off for nuclear war drill! Seems a lifetime away now.
Ernest Goddard was the first Headteacher at this school. He left for another Headship in Nottinghamshire in 1957. I attended here as an Infant, the went to Westfield Infants with Miss Gibbs as Headteacher. Westfield had ramps not stairs. Returned to Bloxam as a Junior before moving to Notts with Dad.
Remember it well – was there 1979 to 1983. I remember Mr Benson, Mr Martin, and Mr Robinson, who always used surnames for his pupils. Mr Wilde’s office smelt of cigars.
I went to Bloxham school from 1960 to 1964 and I know it’s not in Bilton! It’s much closer to Rugby town centre than it is to Bilton. I used to walk to school from Lytham Road, back home for lunch, back for the afternoon and then home for tea – actually I ran, everywhere!
