I remember Harry and Elsie Jackson. Mine was the last pony he shod from 1967.
They were lovely, kind people. They were born in another cottage which could be seen across the road set back in a field.
The forge was wonderful. Many different sized horse shoes hung everywhere, some of great age. One huge one, found nearby, was Cromwellian. The nettle-filled yard was strewn with old farm machinery and inhabited by fierce chickens. I feel lucky to have experienced what turned out to be the end of an era.
Was Harry Jackson in any way related to the Jacksons – the 19th/early 20th century family of Blacksmiths from the Shilton/Bulkington/Ansty area (the area by the NE part of Coventry) of Warwickshire?
