I was at AGS from 1945 to 1949. Mr. Courchee, head. Jim Forest maths, Mr Tucker, geography, Miss Mc Cracken, English language, Miss Yardley taught art. Mr. O’Neill, science. Cannot recall who taught history, Latin or English literature. Hopefully someone will remember other names. Ray Hall.
I was at QE Atherstone 1968 to 1975. Ken Parker, known as “the Bard” was head. Still there then were Mr Tucker, Miss Yardley and the feared Miss McCracken known as “Crackers” who was deputy head.
I also recall a Mr Rossindale (Chemistry), Mr Cowlin, (Physics), Mr Champion, (PE and Geography),Mr Parfitt, (Biology), Mr Fenby (Chemistry) Mr Payne ( French) Miss Daniels (Maths), Mr Kendal (Maths) Mr Baker (Maths) Mr Willions, (History) Mr Feehan ( Latin) Miss Rollason, – I think and a new deputy head MAC Carter, (Geography) joined a couple of years before I left which was the final year before it was merged into a comprehensive with the High School obliging an unsatisfactory two site arrangement which persisted for an unbelievable 40 years until a new purpose built school was built which already is too small for the town.
Hi Keith Charlton. You were in my year I was Sarah Lee then, great to hear the old names you listed!!
I went to AGS between 1963 to 1970. I am familiar with those teachers, but also Greg Williams who taught History , and who could forget Ada Benison , French !
Can anyone remember the house colours? Hill blue, Fulmer yellow Devereux Read?
I was there from 1956
I am trying to find the complete words of our Latin song Scola Nostra Elizabethian condida multida annos est
Or something like that Has anyone got the proper words
I was at AGS from 1946 until 1952.
I started in the Prep Form, Miss Hardstaff was our form teacher. Miss Dodd was the senior mistress Mr Forrest senior master.
I was there from 1959 to 1967. I remember Miss Warwick (RE) known as Fanny for reasons I never knew. Also many of the names mentioned above.
There was a married couple – he taught higher maths, she taught music I think and maybe French, but I cannot remember their surname. Also Rob Walker (Biology), and Eric Venn (English).
The second line of the school song was “condita multos annos est”. I can’t remember the rest. It was absolute doggerel!
I hit on this site because I was trying to remember the first name of “…….,,,Devereux, knight”. I can remember Thomas Fulner and Amyas Hill. I am just reading a new book on the Tudor period and it mentions the Devereux family, which set me off.
I was at AGS from 59 to 65. I remember mr courchee and one day I imitated him and he was standing behind me! I remember miss evans, miss warwick, mr walker and mr venn. Miss McCracken used to make me have a health exam every time and when mum asked why she said “because she’s so small”. She was about 2 inches taller than me! My name was Wykes then. Does anyone remember me?
Some old familiar names there. I was at AGS from 1951 to 56. In addition to Herbert Courchee, the Head Master, was Head Mistress Miss Taylor, who once managed to fall down the steps of the main hall while demonstrating how to descend safely. I also remember the Northerner, Mr. Housely, the Chemistry teacher cruelly nicknamed Hopalong because of his artificial leg and the Welsh Miss George, who taught in that weird little Biology lab. Thanks for the memories.
