Rent stub instructing the English Electric Company to deduct rent weekly from Mr Hodges’ wages for 21 Anderson Avenue. He worked at the British Thomson-Houston Works, and the houses were built for workers of the factory. There was a large Geordie community within the estate, as many had moved down to work for the company. Anderson Avenue was where Fern Hodges, who contributed this item, was born and raised.

PS – might be worth noting that there was another big group of “English Electric houses” in Bilton – known locally as the Nelson Way estate – and the north-east connection might have been stronger here – the former Bilton Social Club in Main Street, Bilton (now replaced by housing) was a hub, I think.
