Notes about this historic site
1 To the N of Brinklow church is the school-house, the garden of which extends up the hill touching the bailey ditch. The schoolmaster, while digging here in 1932, discovered some Roman coins, including one of Valens (AD364-78), suggesting that this part of Brinklow Castle ditch was many centuries old when it was adapted as part of the Norman Castle. Medieval pottery was also found at this location.
3 It is not impossible that the inner bailey incorporated the W half of a small Roman posting station.
4 Reference 3 seems to stretch the available evidence somewhat.
