Notes about this historic site
1 2 In December 1946 the head of a Viking axe was found in Studley churchyard. It was found to the S of the church tower, not far from the boundary. This is almost certainly of the Viking period, 10th century or 11th century, but might equally well have belonged to a Saxon or a Dane. The axe is preserved in the church near to its place of discovery.
3 Local enquiries failed to locate the finder or the exact site of the find.

Comments
I remember seeing the axe head at the church in the 1960s. Later I was told it had disappeared. It was in very bad condition and large flakes of rust were falling off.
