Findspot - Mesolithic flint scatter

Description of this historic site

Findspot - a flint scatter, comprising Mesolithic flint flakes and tools, was found 1km south east of Bretford.

Notes about this historic site

1 Over 50 flint fragments were found as a result of periodic fieldwalking over a number of years. The flints include many waste pieces, a few flakes, some with retouch, and four small polyhedral cores. All appear to be worked from local flint pebbles. Two small cores are in a dark grey-black flint, but most of the material is light grey to brown in colour. Pieces with retouched edges are obviously crude tools. The small cores may indicate microlithic, and therefore perhaps a Mesolithic industry, but so far no microliths have been found at the site.
2 Dating confirmed as Mesolithic.
