It is said to be haunted by more than one ghost. One is a white horse that appears every five years and gallops over the front lawns on the 9th October.
The second is said to have been caused by Prince Edward (later Edward VII) having an affair with a lady of the house. She later gave birth to a mentally subnormal child who had to be confined inside. Some bars which were put up on the windows because of this were still to be seen in the west wing.
