I believe this is my Grandmother’s childhood home. Her Father was the Master Blacksmith in Stretton Under Fosse. The property on the right hand side is I think of the Old Forge. My mother (now in her eighties) has a picture of her grandparents taken outside this house in the ?1900s. Their family name was Jackson. My Grandmother was 1 of 5 children.
This was also my grandmother’s childhood home. This is indeed the Old Forge where Ezekiel Jackson and his wife Elizabeth lived. They had in fact 10 children, the youngest of which was my grandmother – Decima Jackson. Sadly she died when my Dad was only three so I never got to know her. I also have that same photograph and many more. I also have four very large belts or straps and a bunch of keys which I think were belong to the forge and Ezekiel’s name is on them. Would love to know more about the history of the Old Forge.
Hi, this is the first time i have ever emailed anyone so please bear with me. I saw a comment about the old forge in Stretton under Fosse, a lady named Marian O’Connor said her grandmother grew up there as a child, Marian will probably know this being related but I’ll mention it anyway, Ezekiel as a child grew up in the Crown Inn, now named Shilton Arms in Shilton nr Ansty. For over ten years i have both been to classes and followed my family tree of which is a long line of Jacksons, most of which are blacksmiths and are buried in St Andrews graveyard opposite the pub. My 2x grandfather is George Wakelin Jackson who was blacksmith of that parish for many years as it says on his and wifes headstone in this graveyard. I have visited at first with my brother, then a few years later with my grandson and it was something i was glad we did, to know where we came from. I followed Raymond Summers Jackson’s story, Ezakiels brother, which was very interesting, plus alot more of Jacksons backwards forwards and sideways as I always do which I think is the best way myself, and one day I will visit the old forge of Ezakiel as one of my to do list. It was nice to see info what Marian put on this site, it really sideswiped me, and if these comments get through to Marian i hope she will email me with any other info on hers and my Jackson family, thankyou so much for sharing your story, anything about the Jacksons is always welcomed, PS – hope Marian finds out more history of the old forge.
Hi, Marian,
I have not looked at this site since my post(27/10 /17),I therefore missed your recent post. My Grandmother was Carey Grace Rayton nee Jackson. (siblings Elsie,Harry ,Majorie and I think Frank )Their father was Thomas Jackson (wife Ellen) His father was Ezekiel Jackson and Mother was Elizabeth. ( father and sons both Blacksmiths) . My Grandmother was born 1904 and died in 1993 aged 89 years. Her daughter was Barbara my Mother .She passed away just before Christmas 2019 aged 84 years. My Grandmother as stated was bought up at the Old Forge in Stretton under Fosse.
There is a picture taken outside the forge with family members identified .My mother Barbara remembered the house well and gave interesting accounts of family and the interior from childhood. I think Harry the eldest brother was also the last Blacksmith at the Forge.I Know my Grandmother and her Sisters were educated at the Convent at Monks Kirkby. From my own childhood memories I know that the villages of Stretton , Monks Kirkby, and Brinklow were closely linked.I visited St Ediths churchyard with My Mother several times, there are many Jackson headstones. It is a very beautiful church.
I am now 67 years old. I have a memory of visiting my Great Grandmother Ellen, but no memory of Thomas. I am fascinated by history and would be very interested to hear your part of what must be shared family. Ezekiel and Elizabeth Jackson would have been my Great Great Grand Parents.
