Rugby. Peacock Inn

I was sad to see this former pub on the corner of Newbold Road and Essex Street has been sold and is being redeveloped. It opened in 1897 and belonged to Whitbreads in the 1980s. More recently it was the ‘Casa de Tapas’ restaurant. I took some photos in case any of these charming features disappear in future.

Prior to Whitbreads the Peacock was part of the Flowers of Stratford brewery estate. Arthur James Varnish (my grandfather) took the pub in 1910, my father Harold Lorraine Varnish took over after WW2, and my brother Peter John Varnish had it for a short while after Harold retired.
Great to hear from you David. Do you have any memories of the pub you’d like to share with us?
According to the 1891 Census, Elizabeth Weaver Beasley was the licensee of the Peacock Inn (her husband, Henry Beasley having died in 1890); she was still there in 1901. Ten years later, she had left and was living with her widowed sister. Elizabeth Weaver was one of my great++ aunts.
