The signal box is a Great Western Railway design – Type 7D (Brick built with hipped slate roof, ridge vents and stove-pipe chimney). I believe the location is Leamington South Junction Signal Box (so this must be a GWR Permanent Way Gang). The line to the right is the GWR main line to Oxford and London, while that to the left is the link line to the LNWR (Rugby) line. This junction and the link line was opened in July 1908. The Ganger is holding a gauge which is used to confirm the rails are fixed at the correct distance apart.
