Radcliffe Gardens flats in Brunswick Street. The Ford Popular car is parked on the forecourt of the house which was the base for Spa Taxis. This old house probably only survived because it was in constant use as a taxi office when all those around it were being demolished in the 1960s and ’70s. The house opposite with the bike in the garden was demolished in the 60’s to make way for more flats. The Ford has a Dagenham registration because many Ford employees bought their new or nearly new Ford cars directly from the company. There were lots of Dagenham numbers to be seen around Leamington in the ’50s, ’60s, and beyond.
My mother (June Stocker, nee Hodgson) used to live a bit further up the road, on the opposite side, going away from town. Where those flats are now, she says that there used to be a market garden, surrounded by a hedge. Although it apparently got bombed during the war.
